The Intersection of Technology, Design and Product

My team and I have been so honored to meet over 60 female founders in the past few months while we were looking for companies and women to profile on Plum Alley. One of the trends I noticed with brilliant products is that they typically involve the intersection of two disciplines or fields such as art and design or technology and fashion. This multidisciplinary approach to creating products leads to more complex and interesting design.
After meeting Anna Rabinowicz who was recommended by another female founder, I returned to the office and said out loud, “If I had to shut my eyes and dream up a female founder that exemplifies all we stand for, it would be Anna.” She is a woman who has a background in literature and art and then later pursued an engineering degree from Stanford. Using natural stones and materials from around the world and bringing into play her understanding of the construction of products, both natural and human made, Anna builds a precise computer-generated drawing of her product before creating a prototype. What is interesting is that, when she does a computer generated model, she has on more than one occasion, brought her computer and related servers down because of the complexity of calculations in her process. I can see both art and technology in her intricate replication of the sea fan choral made into a piece for both display and practical use as a colander.
With each of our founders, we get to hear about their personal life and values. Anna is deeply devoted to her family and children. Her studio is adorned with art drawings of her two children and her mom helps her company on a regular basis. Her family vacations tend to revolve around exotic trips in the hinterlands in search of family memories and new materials. The employees in her company have flexible work hours to meet the demands of their lives. Anna is a modern woman entrepreneur with education, discipline in craft, a CEO of her own life and company. What she creates in her products is like what she is building in her life, and I am so excited to introduce her work on PlumAlley.co.
